Attach a Custom ISO to a virtual machine

Have you uploaded your ISO file?
Before you can attach a Custom ISO to your virtual machine you must have first uploaded it to your Katapult Organisation, see upload a custom ISO.

  1. Select Compute -> Virtual Machines from the left sidebar
  2. Choose the name/hostname of the virtual machine you wish to attach an ISO to
  3. Select Disks -> Attach an ISO from the menu below the virtual machine's hostname
  4. Select Attach to VM next to the ISO you wish to attach
  5. The ISO will now be attached to the VM for you to use*

*It can take a short while for the ISO to be copied to the hypervisor hosting your virtual machine, but as soon as this is complete the ISO will be attached. You can track progress in the virtual machine's task list.

Detach a Custom ISO from a virtual machine

You have a few options for detaching an ISO from a virtual machine. If it's a custom ISO you wish to detach you can do this from the ISO record on the ISOs page, see Option One below. You can also detach ISOs from the specific virtual machine pages too as covered in option 2 below.

Option One: Detach Custom ISO from the ISOs page

If you wish to detach a custom ISO from one of your virtual machines you can do this from the Storage -> ISOs page of the Katapult console. If you wish to detach another ISO, such as a Katapult provided image for GParted etc, you will need to do this from within the virtual machine's own pages, see option two for those steps.

  1. Select Storage -> ISOs from the left sidebar.
  2. Select the ISO which you wish to detach from a virtual machine
  3. Within the Attached virtual machines table, select Detach from VM next to the relevant virtual machine.

The ISO will then be detached from the virtual machine in question.

Virtual machines that have been deleted, but remain in the deleted items / trash, will still appear in the ISO attachment list should those machines have had the ISO attached at deletion. This will be denoted by a small trash icon. Detaching the ISO from a deleted machine is possible but if you later restore the deleted machine you will need to manually attach the ISO again to restore any functionality it provided.

Option Two: Detach an ISO from within the virtual machine pages

This option will show you how to detach an ISO from a given machine by navigating to that machine in the Katapult console. This is useful if you wish to detach one of the Katpault provided ISO images such as GParted. If you wish to detach one of your own Custom ISOs then it's generally quicker to follow the steps outlined in option one above.

  1. Select Compute -> Virtual Machines from the left sidebar
  2. Choose the name/hostname of the virtual machine you wish to detach the ISO from
  3. Select Disks -> Attach an ISO from the menu below the virtual machine's hostname
  4. Select Detatch from VM next to the ISO you wish to attach
  5. The ISO will now be detached from the VM

Remove a Custom ISO

You must detach the ISO file first!
The ISO you wish to delete must first be detached from all virtual machines it is being used on (if any), see detach a custom ISO from a virtual machine. Note that to aid state-based restoration, any virtual machines in deleted items will still have ISOs attached to them until you either purge the virtual machine from deleted items, or detach the ISO from the machine manually from the Storage -> ISOs page.

  1. Select Storage -> ISOs from the left sidebar
  2. Click the three dots next to the ISO file you wish to delete.
  3. Click Delete.

The ISO will now be deleted from the Katapult system.
