Backup Restoration

Backups, managed by backup policies, can be restored into a new disk. You can then mount the disk to your virtual machine to assist in data recovery or; alternatively, you can use the new disk as your boot disk if required.

Which type of disk policy does the backup relate to?

Virtual Machine - Restore a system disk backup taken from a virtual machine level policy to a new disk

  1. Select Storage -> Disk backup polices from the left sidebar
  2. Select the backup policy related to the virtual machine. (They appear as the machine hostname or the given virtual machine name)
  3. Select the timestamp of the individual backup you wish to restore
  4. Click Restore to new disk from the Actions sidebar
  5. Specify the new disk details
  6. Click the Create system disk button.

The disk will be queued for created from the selected backup.

System Disk - Restore a system disk backup to a new disk

You have two options when it comes to locating the backup you wish to restore. If you've several backups in your organisation you might find it easier to find the backup within the virtual machine itself (Option 2), otherwise using the backup policies page (Option 1) will be fine.

Option One: Disk backup policies page

  1. Click Storage -> Disk backup policies from the sidebar
  2. Select the backup policy related to the system disk you wish to restore (System disks appear in the format - "Disk Name from Virtual Machine Name")
  3. Under the All backups taken for this policy heading, select the backup you wish to restore
  4. From the actions sidebar, select Restore to new disk
  5. Specify the properties for the system disk being created from the backup
  6. Click the Save button

The disk will now be queued for creation from the backup and you will be taken to the system disks page for the virtual machine in question. You can track the progress of the restore by clicking the name of the new disk and referring to its tasks list at the bottom of the disk overview screen.

Option Two: Virtual Machine Disk Page

  1. Select Compute -> Virtual Machines from the left sidebar
  2. Select the virtual machine which has the disk you want to restore a backup of
  3. From overview page select Disks -> System disks from the menu below the virtual machines hostname.
  4. Select the disk in question (System disks appear in the format - "Disk Name from Virtual Machine Name")
  5. Click Disk backup policies from the Disk actions sidebar
  6. Under the All backups taken for this policy heading, select the backup you wish to restore
  7. From the actions sidebar, select Restore to new disk
  8. Specify the properties for the disk being created from this disk
  9. Click the Save button

The disk will now be queued for creation from the backup and you will be taken to the system disks overview for the virtual machine in question. You can track the progress of the restore by clicking the name of the new disk and referring to its tasks list at the bottom of the disk overview screen.

Shared Disk - Restore a shared disk backup to a new disk

You have two options when it comes to locating the backup you wish to restore. If you've several backups in your organisation you might find it easier to find the backup within the shared disks page (Option 2), otherwise using the Backup policies page (Option 1) will be fine.

Option One: Disk backup policies page

  1. Click Storage -> Disk backup policies from the sidebar
  2. Select the backup policy related to the shared disk you wish to restore
  3. Under the All backups taken for this policy heading, select the backup you wish to restore
  4. From the actions sidebar, select Restore to new disk
  5. Specify the properties for the shared disk being created from the disk
  6. Click the Save button

Option Two: Shared Disks Page

  1. Select Storage -> Shared disks from the left sidebar
  2. Select the disk in question
  3. Click Show backup policies from the Actions sidebar
  4. Select the backup policy the backup was taken against
  5. Under the All backups taken for this policy heading, select the backup you wish to restore
  6. From the actions sidebar, select Restore to new disk
  7. Specify the properties for the disk being created from this disk
  8. Click the Save button

The new shared disk will now be queued for creation from the backup and you will be taken to the shared disk overview whereby you can track the progress of the restore by clicking the name of the new disk and referring to its tasks list at the bottom of the disk overview screen. You can then assign and attach the disk containing the backup to one or more machine as desired.
